Here we are, July 27th, at least I've managed to get here twice in one month!
I hate winter, the days when I can't garden are lost days to me, even though there's plenty to do inside most of it's pretty mundane. My painting is still on the go and I do a little every now and then, it might even turn out alright!! The Spring bulbs are gradually coming into bloom but it would be nice if they did it in synch. I guess to have a mass of them you'd have to plant a mass of the same variety of whatever. I examine the rose bushes almost daily to check that they're all still alive, and I guess they are too, there's little green shoots on all of them and even some in full leaf. No sign of frost damage (yet) OK, here's the diary:-
July 5
I dug up a few roses from the beds where they've been living for some time, most were here when we arrived. None of them were doing well, so I thought I'd give them some TLC and put them in pots to see how they fare. They are :- Mr Lincoln, Ekstase, Lolita, Vienna Charm and Glorious. This of course involved buying more potting mix! Fortunately I had the pots already.
I found some forgotten potatoes in the pantry and they had shoots on, so have potted up 4 x30L pots with them. Don't expect to see any growth till Sept/Oct though.
July 7th
Went shopping on my own and found a heap of DA's in Kmart. Bought Falstaff, a really deep red.
July 9
A really bad frost this morning - no damage that I can see.
July 10th
Weather good enough for me to go outside :)
Pulled up all the rocket, lettuce and capsicums. In that space I sowed lots of carrot seeds. Also transplanted some little purple sprouting seedlings to the vegie patch.
I have pulled up 4 of the potted roses that were in the side bed, they were getting smothered by the daisies and needed their own space.
July 11, 12, 13
Cold, wet and windy. Horrible. I turned the compost heap.
July 15th
Looking in the greenhouse I decided some serious tidying was needed. Most of the Fuchsia cuttings had died so I binned them and went and cut some more. These I have put into plastic bags in their pots so hopefully they'll be more successful. I also took some Nodding Violet cuttings. The rose cuttings are looking OK, except for a few with mildew on them. Sprayed with Bicarb.
July 20
We've had rain, rain and more rain over the last few days - I KNOW we need it but I'd like it to fall in the catchment areas and Gimmeabreak!
July 22nd
i planted out a punnet of large Leek seedlings, nearly too late by the look of their roots! I popped them in where they'd be safe to leave for a long time. The Rhubarb is doing OK by the look of it ! (Sorry L1 !)
July 25
I pricked out lots of Cauliflower seedlings into pots and a few cabbages. I will be giving away many of the caulis.
I sowed some Spinach seed in a punnet.
July26
Went to our local market and bought a Mandarin Tree - Imperial. it will be at least 3 years before it fruits so I'll have to be patient. WOT????
Bought several packets of vegie seeds.
July 27
The lawns were mown yesterday, so another compost heap has happened. The previous one which is huge, got soaked in all the rain we had and I'm considering dropping a load of compost worms from my worm farms into it. it won't get hot any more and I can't think of another way to deal with it.
