SEPTEMBER 1st!!!!!
Welcome to Spring!!
I'm so glad Winter is officially over, from now on the weather should get warmer. No guarantees though. Yesterday we had the biggest thunder storm, hail and heavy rain, nothing like nearly Spring !
We've had a long, cold, wet few months and although the rain's been very much needed it doesn't keep the spirits up. I've had the worst case of Winter blues ever.
Anyway, it's all going according to plan out there. The spuds in their 30L pots are up and running, good leaf growth so fingers crossed for a good harvest. Lots of pea pods on the bush peas and they look fat but the peas themselves are still small. All the onions are doing well and the broad beans are up to my shoulders nearly - they're supposed to be Dwarf B Beans !
The new growth on the roses is good to see, even got a couple of blooms from them on bits that didn't get pruned. I've done a revamp of the herbaceous border, cut back all the daisies and put more rose pots over there as well as some cuttings of Cystus, Salvias and unknown plants which I got from friends at a "garden party" for us gardeners who chat together on forums. The Fuschias are putting on their Spring leaves and hopefully they'll do well, I gave them some worm juice recently. The worm farms are going well, I posted off a container of worms to a forum friend in Darwin who needed more, they're very expensive to buy now. They took over a week to get there! We all thought they'd be dead, but they survived! The forum conversations about them were very amusing :)
I gave in to my rose passion again, twice! I bought Brindabella L'Amour and Woburn Abbey from GE - half price. From Treloars I bought Fresh Cream, Fairest Cape and The Childrens Rose.
I'm going to try to grow more strawberries this year, and have decided to grow them off the ground. David put up some shelves on the outside of my shed, and I have planted last year's runners in troughs and placed them thereon. I want to buy some more plants too. I think the old plants have had their dash now.
Whilst weeding a bed which was a bit overgrown I found a Boronia in a pot absolutely covered in buds. It's called B Lipstick, a very pretty pinky red.
I have foliar fed the Citrus with Epsom Salts and Charlie Carp and Powerfeed. Also gave the Camellias and Gordonia some.
The Magnolia has got its first flower!! The Clivias are in bud for the first time !!
The Cymbidiums have out done themselves this year, must be all that rain :) I bought one inside to enjoy, it has 9 spikes on it !
Today I sprayed the Nectarine against Leafcurl - not a minute too soon, the buds are on the verge of opening. I hope the fruit, if any, is better than last year, it was very floury.
Also sprayed the cabbages for caterpillars which are munching into them.
My seed potatoes are planted in the 60L bins now. I had them indoors for ages waiting for them to shoot, but gave up the wait and planted them anyway. They are in the area we cleaned up next to the woodshed, amazing how much space we made :)
