Since my last post I`ve done lots of little jobs out there. Watering was of course one necessity although a couple of times a week is enough at the moment.
The snake beans I planted were plundered by birds the next morning so I have sowed (sown?)some more seeds directly and covered them with bird wire. Part of the vegie bed is vacant now where the cauliflowers were so I`ve dug some compost in there. I have to find room for tomatoes and capsicums soon, also some lebanese cues are nearly ready to plant out. I think the artichokes will find themselves in a flower bed at this rate !
Giving the vegie bed space some thought, I would create more room without all the polypipe arches all over it. So the plan is to build a wooden frame the size of the whole bed and about 1.5 mtrs high, and cover it with bird netting. That way i will also have easier access for weeding feeding and harvesting. I think it`s a good idea and am quite excited about getting the project going. (There`s always a project popping up !)
I am totally amazed at the toughness of roses. The 17 roses that I was given a couple of weeks ago which I potted, are all growing shoots!! I thought their chances of survival were poor, given their age and the lack of root fibres. So I`m thrilled about that and wondering what sort they are. In fact one of the poor little things got lost in the soil where I`d heeled them in and got uncovered today, complete with new shoots !!
I`ve taken more daisy cuttings for the garden club to take if they want them, and some curry plant ones too.
I have put more shelving in the greenhouse. I had a little hothouse without plastic covering which I`d used for the dendrobiums on the patio. They are on the decking now that the weather is getting milder and can catch any rain that`s blown in there. So the shelving is now in the greenhouse.
The next job out there will be spraying the roses with a bicarb solution as some of them have black spot :(
We knocked a galvanised nail into the lime and the lemon trees today as they`re showing signs of deficiancy and Sir Pete recommends this. Also I got a bottle of feed today which contains all the trace elements so they`ll get a spray of that soon.
There are figs forming on our tree too !! (the fig tree, that is !)
