Spring is well under way now, and it's a joy to see all the new leaves especially on the roses. The willows are green and buzzing with bees as they are in flower too.
Most of the garden has has a feed now, he roses got their Sudden Impact on Sept 4. Pots and cuttings got worm juice and power feed. The vegies had worm juice too.
I bought several new strawberry plants and have about 20 so far. Bought new trough pots for them. I found another of those pots here so need another 3 plants :) Bunnings strawbs were really expensive - $4.99 each. Found a nursery at Mount Martha with them for $1.99!
My new roses from Treloars arrived on Sept 8, The Children's Rose, Fairest cape and Fresh Cream. They are all in 30L pots now.
The Fuschias have all been tip pruned, hopefully they will bush out more.
Some of the tomato seeds I had indoors have germinated and some didn't. The ones that did are potted up into bigger fibre pots, and I've re-sown some more seeds , 2 of which have now germinated and 2 have still to do so. All of them are in the greenhouse now.
The rose cuttings haven't been very successful. I got fed up with opening all the ziplock bags to remove dead and mildewed ones, so had the bright idea of transferring them to large storage containers instead. This has led to many of them wilting as the humidity must be a lot less even though they have fairly airtight lids. I may get a few survive, we'll see. It was an experiment anyway - Heaven knows what I'd have done with them all if they'd all struck !!!
The potatoes in the 30L pots are doing really well, up to the top and I can't fit in any more straw etc. Hopefully they'll have little spuds in there :) The spuds in the 60L bins are not leafing yet, but I had a little poke around in them and they're all shooting and rooting.
On the 11th I potted up all the roses that were in small pots and the 2 Wisterias.
I planted the Hippeastrums in their pots again, hopefully they'll flower this year.
The Clivias have buds for the first time and the Magnolia has has 2 flowers :)
When I bought the strawberries from Crittendens I found they were selling Lily of the Valley pips - I bought 10 for $12 and they look good in a shallow round dish. As long as I water them they should be fine.
I had a huge amount of compost that had got saturated before it finished working, and wouldn't have got going again I think. I spread it all over the herbaceous border which is still pretty infertile. 2 days later the blackbirds relocated it to the lawn GROAN. I cleaned it all up and put a little gutterguard fence up to stop them doing it again. I've also made a new compost heap and I'm keeping it covered this time !
This brings me up to date, and today I went to Bittern market looking for more strawberries. Didn't find any but another rose followed me home ! LOL This one is My Choice.
Hooroo till next time.
