A Gardening Diary

Well I haven't left it so long between posts this time thank goodness!
We've had a bit of hot weather here, although not as hot as some places for sure. With the cool change came the opportunity to get out in the garden especially as I was feeling so much better. Energy levels returned and although my foot was still very swollen it wasn't painful, so I was able to get on.
I've had more battles with Powdery Mildew on the roses, and black spot too of course. One eventually gets very tired of using this spray and that and seeing no improvement. I just pull the sick leaves off and cut off the mildewy bits now!!
The weeds had being partying while I was not doing much out there, but I've fixed all that up! The herbaceous border got a good going over and looks heaps better. Likewise the side vegie bed Wow was that full of Couch! I moved around the potted roses and cleaned them up and am in the middle of making labels for them. I buy the metal ones from Diggers, they are galvanised I think .Anyway I paint them white and write on them with permanent markers. They're a bit exxie so can't do them all at once, I've got about 70 to do and so far only have done 20! When the roses have their winter prune I don't know what variety they are if they've lost their paper labels, and the wind gets rid of lots of those!
I gave the strawberries a good sort through too, cut off the runners and planted them in big pots with the cut ends in water - worked for me last time!
My shed had the tidying of it's life too, Gawd it was digusting! I need to put proper shelving in there where an old kitchen cupboard sits, but I'm saving for my holiday in April so it will have to wait.
Today the lawns were done and it's all looking very nice. Tomorrow look out the compost heap!! Oh and weeding the front garden too.
The nectarine tree is loaded this year. I hope that a) it doesn't break under the weight. b) that the fruit is juicier and sweeter than last years c) that the possums and birds don't get them cos there ain't no net on them!!
A major pleasure this year is that a family of Brown honeyeaters are nesting in a Japanese Maple on the corner of the house. Our first native birds!! We've had PLENTY of Blackbirds and Indian Miners.
