A Gardening Diary

Thursday, October 18, 2007

It's been another busy week in the garden. It started with a lovely warm day which I spent watering and weeding. The following day it was blowing a gale and we had huge gusts of wind every now and then. Unforunately I had left open the greenhouse door and windows due to the previous day's heat, and the wind got in there and blew one of the side panels in. Fortunately there weren't many plants etc in there, just the Frangipanis and a couple of orchids. The Frangis went straight back in their pots and don't seem any the worse for wear and the orchids were untouched. It was a difficult job trying to force the panel back in without a total disassembly of the greenhouse, but we managed up to a point, and now that side has been reinforced with extra aluminium support strips so hopefully it won't happen again.( Says to herself a million times " I must not forget to shut greenhouse in winds again")
I spent a long time using the "Jungle Juice" all over the garden. I had 2 60lt drums full of horse poo and other stuff in water which had been waiting to get used, so one drum is now empty. The pots and other assorted plants got a serve of Dynamic Lifter which i had bought to feed the orchids with. We watched a demo at Mornington Centro of how to look after your orchids by a member of the Peninsula Orchid Society. It was very interesting and informative and apparently they thrive on a pinch of DL for the roots and leaves, and a feed of Phostrogen helps the flowers along. All this was done this week. :)
The roses have had their second feed of Sudden Impact too. they're all full of buds still and it's a very exciting time seeing which one blooms next. The Dove has opened, a sweetly pale pink double and Mary Rose has several blooms. Buccaneer is nearly open and Radio Times likewise. One of the roses I was given has a red bud nearly open :) I still can't get over how pretty Harry Wheatcroft is though .
The front garden has had a bit more attention, I've put soil wetter on the new plantings and the pigfaces have started to bloom, it will be quite pretty when it's all established.
I had a tidy up in the vegie patch and pulled up all the collards, we really don't like them and they will make good compost !
I found heaps of tomato seedlings all over the place, even in pots of roses, so i dug them all up and replanted 6 of them. I've bought a tomato growbag to try and will put 2 Tigerellas in it.
Today was another watering day, it's so good to have the bore.
Tomorrow I'll pot some cuttings and repot some strawberries..
